If you are using AVG antivirus....

If you are using AVG antivirus - they had a problem this week. An update on Wednesday caused all PC type computers (I don't know if MACs were involved) to throw up red flags... "your computer is infected" type flags. Not true! The next update a day later (I think) corrected it.

Here is what I suggest: Remove all antivirus (Norton, AVG, Avast) and all anti malware software (Spybot, Adaware and the like). Then (and only AFTER you've removed it all) install Microsoft Security Essentials. Here's a link.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Your computer will breathe a sigh of relief! and I bet work faster.

Microsoft has a fairly new Anti-virus/anti-malware software that is now getting very high marks. I recommend it. I've been doing this all over the community with good result.

After instillation (takes about an hour), ask it to do a quick scan - it's normal setting - which may take an of hour. This should confirm that AVG had 'misspoken', and that you are red-flag free.

The site will be far expanded from what was previously available online. If there’s breaking news, you’ll find it on our “Home” page.....

Several organizations have already found ways to share their group’s memories through creative slide shows of past events.

Go to www.PortLudlowToday.com if you have not yet registered and click on the register button in the upper left hand corner. Complete the registration form and that is all there is to it. It is much more than a website. Register today and see for yourself!

Since going online January 1, the Port Ludlow Today Team is pleased to announce that the site has a rapidly growing list of registered members from the community and an increasingly larger list of clubs, organizations, amenities and merchants populating the site. There’s a revolving display of very current news and announcements. Also, there are helpful directories for viewers’ health, safety, club activities, merchant offerings and other services.

“R & R” in Port Ludlow

by Dave Pike, PortLudlowToday.com

Port Ludlow is a wonderful place to live, and its natural beauty provides a huge dose of “Rest and Relaxation” to all who call it home. However, there is another “R&R” that is just as important. That “R&R” is called “Responsible Recycling” and it represents our civic responsibility to ourselves, our community and future generations. Did you know that you can now recycle electronics for free? Did you know that you can drop off print cartridges and fluorescent bulbs at the Bay Club? Did you know that you can recycle those old zinc anodes from your boat at the Marina?

We have devoted a section in www.PortLudlowToday.com that provides information on these and other recycling options available to all of us. Just click on the homepage Quick Link, “community recycling,” to learn about all of the options available.

If you have not yet had a chance to visit PortLudlowToday.com, please take a minute to check it out. We believe you will find relevant and timely information about your community. You can also visit us at the Bay Club on Wednesdays in March from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to see live demonstrations on how to use this new communications tool.

Resident Profile: The Amazing Mary Ronen

by Eline Lybarger, Contributing Editor. PLVoice, February 2009, p.6

"Mary grew up in Long Beach, California, among two sisters and three brothers...

[...........]

... In 1996 Bob Force started the Computer Club; Mary was one of those first 30 members, and did the Computer Club newsletter. She quickly became a Board Member of the Club along with Ralph Thomas, who asked her to work on a monthly publication he would call the Voice. The first edition came out in 1998.....

....She continues to serve as the Computer Club’s Secretary and has taken on yet another volunteer challenge: Community Enrichment Alliance (CEA)...

Her plans for the future include travel and playing on the computer, particularly genealogy research. She discovered her family on her mother’s side fought in the Revolutionary War, and a great grandfather from Ohio fought in the Civil War. Mary is amazing."

"Thank you to the Port Ludlow Computer Club who recently donated a used computer that they setup as a public computer in the Gazebo at the Beach Club. To go with the computer,LMC member Pete Becker donated a flat panel monitor. The public computer has internet access but does not have a printer connected at this time. The computer has been configured to not save data, so bring a USB memory stick if you plan on saving your work." Computer Club News (January 9, 2009):
Fire, Rescue, and Technology!

The Port Ludlow Computer Club (PLCC) General Meeting is Monday, February 9, 6:00 p.m., at the Bay Club, with a topic that is sure to interest and educate everyone attending.

Helmets, hoses, and axes are the typical tools of firefighting—they are the items most often associated with the job, and are not likely to go away anytime soon. New products and innovations are constantly moving in and out of the market and, combined with the old standbys, are helping to advance safety and effectiveness in the fire service.

Like so many other areas of modern society, technological advances in the emergency sector are giving first responders an edge previously unattainable. Often the most substantial gains are not in the improved performance of existing tools, but in the ability to gather and use information. Items such as databases, in-vehicle computers, mobile devices, and GPS tracking equipment are enabling everyone to be more informed and with that, to make better decisions.

Fire Chief Ed Wilkerson will be sharing his perspective on how technology is changing the world that he works in and why it should be important to us. Please join us as we gain new insight into the changing world of technology. PLCC General Meetings are open to the entire community.

A Digital Village in Port Ludlow?
by Dave Pike

After a year in planning, a digital village is finally coming to Port Ludlow. PortLudlowToday.com (currently in BETA testing) is being deployed incrementally throughout the community. The Internet-based technology allows our community to provide and receive current information regarding events important to us all—such as Hood Canal Bridge closings and Iron Mountain Quarry permitting status.

Port Ludlow community clubs and organizations will have the opportunity to communicate with their members and the public about upcoming events and items of interest. Homeowner organizations will use this technology to conduct association business and keep in touch with their membership. In addition, there will be opportunity for businesses to reach the Port Ludlow community with offers of their goods or services. We anticipate making PortLudlowToday.com available to the entire community early in January 2009 for an extended community evaluation period, after which we will make a collective decision about the use and benefit of the program. Beginning Computer Class Scheduled

Classes are forming at the Bay Club for the next Beginning Computer Class sponsored by the Port Ludlow Computer Club (PLCC). These classes have been offered for 12 consecutive years as a community service. PLCC membership is not a requirement. This class is suitable for beginners, for people contemplating a computer purchase and generally for people who wish to understand or brush up on the fundamentals of Windows 95/98/Me/XP/Vista, e-mail, letter writing and Internet browsing. It is also useful for people transitioning from Windows 98/ME to Windows XP and from Windows XP to Vista.

The class, now open for registration, will begin on Wednesday, February 18, and will continue for four additional consecutive Wednesdays, February 25, March 4 and 11 ending on March 18. Class hours are 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Bay Club.

The fee is $30, which includes an easy-to-use text. Over 750 of your neighbors have already attended this popular course and it fills very rapidly. If you have interest or wish to register, please call Bernie Kestler at 437-5102 for all the details as soon as possible.
