Syllabus for PLCC Beginning Computer Course

 


Summary

This Course moves the participant from Beginner to Basic User by teaching only the fundamentals that are necessary to go from little or no knowledge of computer operating to enable further practice in the movements of basic Windows 98/XP, basic Letter Writing, basic Email and basic Internet Browsing. Since participants are assumed to be true beginners, the course concentrates on just the necessary material that a beginner can reasonable absorb in 15 class hours spread over a five week period. Home study and practice is expected thereby achieving success through repetition, text usage and keyword memory techniques.

This course is suitable for anyone who has a new computer, who is contemplating the purchase of a computer or who desires a refresher on the fundamentals of operating a computer.

Five formal 2 and 1/2 hour classes plus five informal Q & A sessions are conducted utilizing key chapters in the provided text entitled:

"Teach Yourself Windows Visually" - Marin Graphics

 

This text also provides supplemental information for later home study enabling the participant to expand and learn more in various non-critical areas. Ample time is provided for questions which are strongly encouraged.

Additionally, hardware purchase guidelines are discussed plus an optional Q & A post class review session is offered.

Overview of Each Text Chapter

Chapter One

Windows basics, start up, shut down, understanding the concept of desktop/laptop computers, use of the mouse/keyboard/disks. manipulation of the windows, locating programs and other get started items.

 

Chapter Two

Documents, text, composing, editing, storing files, basic letter writing and identification and use of the various menu and tool bars.

 

Chapter Three

Supplemental - Create Pictures/Paint

 

Chapter Four

Contents of the computer, using Windows Explorer.

 

Chapter Five

Files, folders, recycle bin, printing, finding files, shortcuts.

 

Chapter Six

Customize, Task bar, control panel settings, start programs, start menu.
