Travel Technology

Gadgets, Gizmos, & Software

Come to the Port Ludlow Computer Club General Meeting at the Bay Club on Monday, July 12, as we spend an evening talking about gadgets, devices, software, online services, etc., that allow us to travel easier, safer, and more informed than ever before. We’ll look at some of the opportunities that GPS has brought us. Those of us that spend times in the outdoors (hikers, campers, kayakers, fishermen, hunters, boaters, etc) can add the convenience and safety of a multitude of products with GPS.

Planning a trip or vacation is simple and fast today because of mapping software and online services for booking reservations, scheduling, and creating maps and more. How about software to track your fuel mileage or record your entire trip? Computers and Smart phones all have wonderful apps available to assist with your navigation, mileage, etc.

Bring your favorite gadget or story to the meeting. Let’s share our experiences with the emerging travel technology. PLCC General Meetings are open to everyone and we hope you will attend.

The Presentation starts at 6:00 p.m., and there is a social time at 5:30 p.m.

You got (E)Mail!

with Dick Allyn and Matt Wallace

Monday After: Special SIG: EMAIL

If you are puzzled or confused by all the terms about Email, if you want to gain some understanding to better use Email, If you want to remove the clouds of “techie talk” about Email; plan to attend the May General Meeting of the Port Ludlow Computer Club for an evening of discussion on Email “nuts and bolts”.

Learn about servers, settings, webmail, clients, attachments, etc . . . in English! No tech speak, no in depth explanation about everything that you didn’t want to know about Email. PLCC members will present a program of easily understood facts that will improve your use and understanding of Email. The panel will then open the floor to attempt to answer your questions or difficulties with Email.

Join them at the Bay Club on Monday evening, May 10, for a social time with coffee and cookies at 5:30. The presentation begins at 6:00. You don’t have to be a member to attend; PLCC General Meetings are open to all.

Health Care for Port Ludlow: Online Guide for Online
and Brick & Mortar Resources

(A Volunteer Community Project to Improve the Access to Health-Related Information for Port Ludlow Residents)

-- A PORT LUDLOW TODAY Project --

PLT-Health Resource Flyer (pub/4MB)

Handout on "Online Medical Information"

The new Community Online Health Care Resource Guide is now operational and accessible on www.portludlowtoday. com. Last January, a small but passionate group of community volunteers got together and rolled up their sleeves. They reviewed existing health care information available all over the Internet.
Their goal: to have an online guide that would help the Port Ludlow community as they deal with very real health care issues in a very rural setting. While this project is a continuing work in progress, the website is taking shape and is worth sharing.

Join the Port Ludlow Computer Club (PLCC) on Monday, April 12, as this volunteer group presents a demonstration of its new Community Health Care Resource Guide.

A social period begins at 5:30 p.m. with coffee and cookies and the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Bay Club. See you there.

Discussion & Hands-On Demonstration of E-Book Devices

Electronic Book Readers: A good thing or bad?

Resources:

Books have been around in their current form for a very long time and have, thus far, proved resistant to technological changes. The basic concept of a book today is very much the same as it was a hundred years ago. Now, however, it looks like technology may have eventually found a better format for enjoying the written word—or has it?

A simple idea in principle, electronic book readers, or eBook readers as they are commonly known, provide the facility to store entire book collections in a package smaller than a traditional paperback, without affecting the ability to read and enjoy books wherever and whenever you like.

Join the Port Ludlow Computer Club (PLCC) as we explore this topic and have a show and tell of the most common devices on the market such as the Kindle, Nook and Sony e-reader. Club member Martha Dawson will be leading the Monday, March 8, presentation at the Bay Club beginning at 6:00 p.m., with a social time at 5:30 p.m. This event is open to the entire community and all of its book lovers. Please join us for this very special evening.

"Using your Computer for Home Finance"

Come and explore the options for Home Finance Software and how it can save you a considerable amount of time.

Quicken Financial Software

Surveys about computer use suggest that, next to e-mails, using the computer for managing finances is one of the top-reported uses. Quicken software is most commonly used for home finances, and the Port Ludlow Computer Club (PLCC) will present an overview of Quicken software for home finances at its February meeting. Dave Pike and Don Folsom will show simple and easy examples of how the software can be used to build a household budget and print reports such as actual expenses vs. budget, year-to-date expenses, how much was paid to various vendors, etc.

If you would like to learn more about Quicken and how it can assist you in managing household finances, please join the PLCC at the Bay Club on Monday, February 8, at 6:00 p.m. as we explore this topic.
